An Important Update About the SideReel iOS and Android Apps

We are sorry to announce that we will be pulling both the SideReel iOS and Android apps from their respective stores and discontinuing their availability this week. This is something that we wish we did not have to do, and delayed doing so for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, we must pay licensing fees to display various information – show listings, posters, etc. – in the apps, and the cost of this information was not being offset by the advertising revenue we have been making. We have been losing money continuing to run these apps for quite some time, and sadly we can no longer afford to do so.

Our website – which is mobile responsive – will continue to run unchanged. This means that if you were only utilizing the apps previously, you can still access your tracker – and many additional features not present in the app (such as your lists) – by going to sidereel.com on your desktop or in your mobile browser. Your login credentials will remain the same, however you can contact us at customer_support@sidereel.com if you are experiencing any issues. Our hope is that one day we can figure out a model where we *can* offer SideReel apps once more. Until then, we hope that you will continue to utilize the SideReel website. Thank you for supporting the SideReel apps throughout the years.

  • SiftedBrotita says:

The iOS app functionality wasn’t great. I’m just happy the website isn’t going anywhere 😀

  • Harry says:

Thanks for keeping the site running! I personally didn’t care for the app anyways.

  • Kelsey says:

Thank you for keeping the website running. I use it on a daily basis.

I actually prefer the website so for those of you using the app check it out. I started using the site years ago n tried the app but I think the website is easier to navigate. Glad the site will continue to run! It’s on my favorites list n I keep a SideReel tab open at all times. ❤️

  • MNH says:

Looks like you are losing me as a user.

  • Debbi says:

This makes me sad. Thanks for providing the app as long as you did. Best of luck to you.

  • Melissa says:

This legitimately broke my heart. I’ve been using sidereel long before apps were even a thing on a daily basis. The app kept all my show obsessions organized. I know the website will do that as well, but it’s not as convenient. I would even pay a small monthly fee for it. I of course still love sidereel and will still use it religiously, but I just wanted to you to know how bummed I am.

    • Tracey says:

You took the words right out of my mouth!! I love this App!

      • Beth Taylor says:

Same here. The website is more cumbersome on a mobile device, with ads taking up half the page sometimes. I don’t begrudge the ads; they are a necessary evil in the world of free services, but when it’s hard to navigate around them? It’s truly disappointing that the only app I use daily, and that even includes email, is going away. So, so sad.

    • Cindy says:

I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you for developing a leading edge application. You delivered a service far before anyone thought of it and you know your customer base well. I wish there was more we could do to help.

  • Alex says:

I understand but this is very unfortunate to hear. I have used the Sidereel app every single day for nearly 6 years. Hopefully the Mobile page can be tweaked with user feedback as generally they are difficult to use and not touch friendly.

    • Alex says:

Want to add that the service is incredible, I have looked and can find no other site that offers anywhere near the same features. I am glad to still have the website.

  • Lauren says:

I appreciate that your website is still running and I’m sorry about losing money. However, I wish you had given us notice before discontinuing the app. The app was abruptly discontinued between last night when I was using it and today, so without having any prior notice from you I assumed your whole website had shut down abruptly. I had to search for answers on google and then several search results down was directed to this post on twitter. I know I would have appreciated even a couple days notice and an explanation emailed to me or displayed on the app. That way I would still know to use your website. I’m sure your customers that don’t follow Twitter would like to be informed.

Just my two cents. Thanks for continuing to run your website!

    • Rachel says:

Thanks for your feedback, Lauren! We hear you, and also wish we could have given more clear notice within the app. If you click through on the tracker, we also direct you to this blog post, but it is not the most straightforward, we agree. We were able to give advance notice on the website itself and through our social and support channels, but unfortunately did not have a good way to do it within the app itself, and do apologize. At any rate, we are happy you found your way here, and also to the website!

  • Amanda says:

I have been using this app religiously for the past 5+ years and I can’t imagine life without it. Seriously, I use it multiple times a day. So beyond sad to hear this but I totally understand the reasoning. Heartbroken but I’ll definitely continue to use sidereel.com

  • Alyssa says:

I’m sad to hear it. Your app was really good. I’d be willing to pay for it. Good luck, and keep at it!

  • Josh says:

This is disappointing. How about those of us who paid to remove ads?
Can the app not be made to show text only? It’d be minimalistic but better than nothing.
I hope this isn’t a sign for the full website because I would hate to lose it.

    • Mel says:

Very disappointing, the app was great – I only paid to remove ads in the last month too!

I hope the website stays around and I agree the app would be fine without images.

  • Richard says:

Would be willing to pay a yearly subscription. I used this app every day. Going to be missed

  • Joel says:

That’s awful news. The app was great and the website is terrible. What a waste.

  • Leslie says:

This is truly depressing! I understand that business is business, and I’m grateful you’re doing what you have to do to keep the website, but I do hope you’ll find a way to bring the app back some day.

  • Alex says:

As several have said I too would be totally willing to pay a monthly fee.

  • Andrew says:

I thought the mobile app was quite slow and the website offered a much better experience. I’m glad to see you offer a mobile-friendly version of the website.

  • Renee Walker says:

Love you guys and all you do for us tv show obsessers! I have been using sidereel for almost 7 years now and I love what you guys have to offer- I have too many shows that I watch and this keeps them all organized :). I wish you luck in finding more funding

  • Marita Svendsen says:

Thats so sad :( I use the app multiple times a day! I would gladly pay for it!!
But I’m happy the page doesn’t disappear:)

  • Duarte says:

I’m really sad to hear this news. I use your app at a daily basis and I even paid to get the no ads solution. I didn’t mind because the service you provide is crucial for the tracking of the 30 or more series I watch (or try to 😂). I really hope that the app can get back to the store someday. I will miss the number of episodes to see over application’s icon 😢

  • Gerry says:

Thank you Rachel and the Sidereel team for a great app…I have been using it 5 or 6 years I guess. It was my go to app every single day for my tv programs….”I am so sad to see it go” and I do hope that you guys will be able to find an alternative. I will absolutely continue to use the website. One quick question….I receive an email every morning with my show schedules….will that continue? Again, “thank you all for the incredible service. Best wishes and, good luck for the future.

    • Rachel says:

Thanks, Gerry. Yes, you will still receive these emails!

      • Gerry says:

Thank you very much for the quick reply Rachel (and the good news that the emails will still keep landing in my inbox every morning)….I really appreciate that. Best wishes and, good luck with a possible future app. :-)

  • Jodie says:

It has been almost a year to the day that I paid 99p (GBP £0.99) to remove the ads. I know this was a one-off fee, but would happily pay 99p per year, every year, if you could continue use of the app, as I used it multiple times a day and found it much more useful and user friendly that the website for general day-to-day tracking. Thank you and fingers crossed for the future :)

  • Sue says:

Oh no, so sad to see the app go :(
I use it daily. I was on it just now and my tracker wasn’t loading then I saw the message on the app.
At least you’re keeping the website up, thank you.

  • Xime says:

    THIS IS SO SAAAAAAAAD!!!

  • Emilie says:

Can you not charge $.99 or something for the app? I would pay to keep it !

Also can you please make the calendar go further back in time on the website? This functionality is on the app but not on the website and it is very frustrating!

  • Khalid Reda says:

It’s unfortunate even though I’m not much of an app user. But why lose Android users ?
What about adding the .APK file as an external download through an extra button on the homepage ?
Android users wouldn’t feel much of a difference and Apple users must just learn how to use the website until some other way is found.

I hope my idea is considered helpful.
I’ve been using Sidereel for so long on every platform possible and I hope it lasts forever.
Thanks for your efforts to make following up with TV ten times easier.

  • Jane says:

I use the website almost every day. So glad to know it will continue. Thanks!

  • Tina Hadley says:

Thanks for letting us know, very rarely use the app but on the website all the time, would be lost without it.

  • Claytinu2500 says:

Hi, would Sidereel consider a subscription service? Monthly or yearly. I just love the community so much, and sidereel.com is literally the first bookmark I go to every day. I’ve been using Sidereel since 2010, and I don’t want the website to end up like the app, so please do consider a subscription service if something were to happen money wise. I’ll gladly pay :)

  • Rob says:

This is a huge bummer. I tracked everything through the app. This reduces your value and I’m quite disappointed. I’ll likely be moving to a completely different app as a result. It was good while it lasted.

  • Elkie Dee says:

Thanks for keeping the site running. Such a great service

  • Flump says:

Sidereel you do an incredible job and I doubt I will be moving to another provider (if there even is one) any time soon. As an iOs user I found the app lacked the functionality of the website so no heartbreak here
However, I wanted to point out how crazy it is that you are being charged to use metadata for what is ostensibly a publicising service (with show reviews too) for all these TV shows. If you didnt do what you do I wouldnt know about a most of the shows. And how can that be a good thing?
    You are loved Team Sidereel

  • Huzefa says:

The sidereel app was a major part of my daily activity. i got so shocked when i saw that it has been discontinued. i would recommend charging some minimum charge to all the users for the app and keep it running. i wouldn’t want to let go of such an app

  • Jade says:

I’m grateful that you’re keeping the desktop version up, and have been a member for many years. I’ve been using the iOS app for years too, probably more than the website because it’s convenient – and the desktop site always shows an Unresponsive Script Error all the time. As for ads on the iOS app: I will say that those extremely LOUD video ads were very jarring (especially if it’s late at night) so it would force me to close the app as fast as possible. If the ads didn’t have sound, maybe they would have gotten more clicks? I don’t even know what the ads were because they were so loud I had to quit the app to avoid waking up my family while I stay up late watching TV. Maybe a change to the type of ads would help?

  • Dave Mac says:

Thanks for the heads up! As much as I loved the app’s data management (keeping track of viewed and next up in series), if an app could even just maintain a filtered TV listing to Guide us as to which of our shows is putting out a new episode in the next or past weeks, that would be very helpful! (would’t even need show details, if those cause licensing issues…).
Will be visiting the website on my phone a tad more often now. ^.*

  • Sheryl says:

Thank you for keeping the web site running. I never even tried the app but use the web site from my phone. I especially appreciate the daily email and have come to depend on it.

  • Tegan says:

Oh no, I love having the Android app! If you release a paid version of the app, please email all users!!!

  • Nat says:

I paid to have ads removed from the app – can I do this for the site too?

  • Rob says:

Any recommendations from anyone for a new ios app? I only used the website for alerts since the ios app didn’t show them. I paid to have the ads removed. I need a new iOS app now.

  • Matt says:

Wow this was sudden no warning. Also feel like you stole from me. I had the paid version (no adds) of the app for one month. Then now gone. I know it’s only $1 but still the principle of taking someone’s money.

  • RAJESH MEHTA says:

Thank you for this update. I use both the website & app. Its fine to continue with the website. Keep up the good work.

  • Francine says:

I loved the app. While there was more info on the website, the app was definitely easier. And even though it says the 2 are supposed to sync up, mine never did. So I have lost everything that I was tracking .

    • Rachel says:

      Hi Francine-
We are confident we can help you track it down! Please email us and we’ll get it sorted out.

  • Shharukh Issani says:

    Hello there ,
It is quite disappointing but if possible to understand what are the missing requirements are we looking at to keep this alive ?

  • Katrien says:

I love your app and would be willing to pay for it!

  • Daniela says:

Sad to see the app go, I have been using it since probably the very beginning. I remember when you guys had links for eps, yup that long. Anyways, have been using all three alternatives for a long time now and though I will miss having all my info a finger touch away as an app, but as long as you guys are still around I will more than definitely continue using the site to feed my 160+ show addiction.

  • Stanley says:

I’m gonna miss this app very much. And thank you for the opportunity.

  • Indranil says:

your PWA works… should be fine :)
