An Important Update About the SideReel iOS and Android Apps

We are sorry to announce that we will be pulling both the SideReel iOS and Android apps from their respective stores and discontinuing their availability this week. This is something that we wish we did not have to do, and delayed doing so for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, we must pay licensing fees to display various information – show listings, posters, etc. – in the apps, and the cost of this information was not being offset by the advertising revenue we have been making. We have been losing money continuing to run these apps for quite some time, and sadly we can no longer afford to do so.

Our website – which is mobile responsive – will continue to run unchanged. This means that if you were only utilizing the apps previously, you can still access your tracker – and many additional features not present in the app (such as your lists) – by going to sidereel.com on your desktop or in your mobile browser. Your login credentials will remain the same, however you can contact us at customer_support@sidereel.com if you are experiencing any issues. Our hope is that one day we can figure out a model where we *can* offer SideReel apps once more. Until then, we hope that you will continue to utilize the SideReel website. Thank you for supporting the SideReel apps throughout the years.

your PWA works… should be fine :)

  • Ironiclast says:

I would like to echo other commenters here and say I would be willing to pay a (reasonable) yearly fee to keep the app running. It’s much easier for me to utilize the app to see exactly what is on every night, and none of the other apps I’ve tried recently compare. They either just track but don’t let you mark watched, or do track and let you mark watched but don’t show any kind of icon badge notification to remind me to look for an episode that day.

  • Jill says:

I understand however I literally paid the $1 for ad free and now the apps is gone. I’d like a refund.

    • Rachel says:

You should be able to request a refund from Apple if you just recently paid the fee. Thanks!

      • Anni says:

I just bought the ad-free version a few weeks ago because I thought I‘ve been using your website and app for years and paying for ad-free version was the least I could do.
Anyways, tried it with Apple and there is no refund option even though it was less than 3 weeks ago.
As for the website, I‘m glad it‘s still running but the mobile website (iOS) is a pain to use, constantly have to re-login again, so unless you fix that and make it actually user-friendly on a mobile device I have to look for alternatives. Really disappointed! :(

    • lex says:

Really? Wanting your $1 back? I can’t believe how cheap some people are. You must be awful to be around lol. You’re the reason these apps can’t stick around.

  • Mark says:

I am gutted. Seriously people, the first indication that something was wrong was when I just fired up the app on my iPad. Only a terse notice that the app has been discontinued is showing and nothing else.

Is this the best way to treat regular users? Even a month’s warning would have been better than this.

I find the data on the web site far more confusing as to where I am with a particular series, and I paid for the ad free version too. How about a kodi app with similar functionality?

  • Joana says:

Thanks for keeping the site running :) I’ve been using the site for almost 8 years and personally it’s not much different than the app. I’ll still be here to support you if a new app if launched. if not, at least we have the website!!!!

  • Echo says:

The only issue with the site is that there isn’t a tab for “unwatched episodes”. I literally have to scroll through my list of 100+ shows to find the next episode. Can this featured be added to the website?

  • Lisa says:

Where can I find my tracker? Not so sure I can remember all of my shows!

  • JuanOhJuan says:

The phone app never worked correctly for me. The free web page is great, except for the small nuisance of the ads–which I don’t really mind. I love SideReel’s show tracking service, it’s fantastic.

  • Saurabh Agarwal says:

App was never good, I tried using it and it was often unresponsive and not good.

  • alice says:

Thank-you for the info. Though I do not used the service mentioned above I have utilized the Sidereel site since the early days; first discovering it through a promo on the Allucee-2 site back in the ’90’s.

Thank-you for your excellent Tracking service and all the associated extras.
    A Whisell

  • Aaron says:

I am also very dissapointed that the apps will no longer be made available. What is your long term strategy moving forward? I use the mobile android app daily.

  • Al Soto says:

No one here should complain, ask for refunds, etc. This is a wonderful, indispensable service that is provided free of charge. i couldn’t keep up with my viewing if not for this site. Just get it on your browser, save the link, you’re done. What’s the big deal? Learning to adjust to changes is a part of growing up.

  • Max says:

I too would be willing to pay to keep the app going. Give it another go sidereel.

  • Liam says:

Should have warned people, I hope everyone boycotts sidereel, I am . Bye losers.

  • Daniel says:

Having seen your app, it’s not surprising that it failed to generate revenue. It was truly one of the worst, laziest mobile applications I’ve ever seen. Its UI was entirely unworkable, and I preferred the not-particularly-good mobile site anyway. Your app might have seen good revenue if you actually hired competent mobile developers to write it. But… Fine.

  • Greg says:

I figured this wouldn’t be that big of an issue since I have used the site as a tracker prior to the existence of the mobile app (since maybe 2008/9). However, the app made it so much easier to simply see what shows were on a specific date and to mark an episode as watched without having to login every time through my phone on the website. Also, the mobile site is not really user friendly and maybe if it was tailored slightly after the app that could be a good alternative. At the moment I find it easiest to remain logged in on my laptop and use the desktop version, but that is not always convenient. I understand the issues behind the discontinuation of the app, but I am holding out hope that some alternative will be made available.

  • Ferrari says:

    Thanks for this wonderful site.
, this is where i’ve been tracking all my shows for years. Hope the app will be back soon.

  • dean paginton says:

As people have suggested.. for iOS and Android services you REALLY should have charged, even if it was only $3 a month for the mobile services, surely that would have covered your costs and earned you more with the amount of users that used your SideReel app. I think you prematurely ended this app without even coming up with any type of solution. You should have at least tried out the subscription fee for 6 months to a year to see where THAT would have taken things.. really disappointed in this decision.. but it’s all done and dusted now. Maybe if you still have all the source code for the APP you can do a relaunch at another time and CHARGE for it on a monthly basis with NO adds.

  • ohiocarole says:

Funny, 1st time I tried to join this and turns out it’s been shut down , Good thing it only took a 1/2 hour. Bye

  • Hanz says:

I’d be willing to pay a monthly fee too!

  • I’ve always use the websute. aps are overestimated.
    love you

  • jr Marin says:

I was planning to buy the no advertisement fee, literally today.
I have no idea why I decided to open the website before I paid for it.
Anyway, it is sad to see this app pulled off the itunes store.
I’ve been using on and off for the past 4-5 years.
Lately (less than 2 weeks ago) I started using it again.
    Sad to see it go.

  • Joseph Farrugia says:

I will gladly pay a reasonable fee for the app. I think €2 to €3 a month would be reasonable.

  • hind says:

    Thx for the great work!
Sidereel has been a life changer in regards to track the enormous amount of series I watch.
you do a great job and I’m sure you’ll come back one day with a great app.

til then will be using the website that I actually never stopped using even when the app was running 😉

    All the best!!

  • Eva says:

Love you guys and loved the app, hope one day you’ll manage how to put it back. Free for users;)

  • Elizabeth Demery says:

Sad! But completely understandable. To be honest i like the website easier. I mostly use my computer to watch shows anyhow! Thanks for the update. I was wondering why my app wasnt working!

  • Robert says:

Thank you, Sidereel staff, for the service you provide overall. I haven,t found another tracking service that allows you to see what’s airing a week at a time, mark off episodes and whole seasons as watched, see cancellation and renewal information for a show/series…..all for free. I hate that the costs caught up to you guys, but I appreciate that you covered the costs to keep the service running as long as you did…..versus the alternative of shutting the whole site down.

For those asking for a refund of the $1 that was paid to enjoy the ad-free experience of the app (and whatever else came with that), consider that you got your money’s worth since the service is still available and because it was ONLY ONE DOLLAR! Using the site is not that complicated, and you have more options on the site than you did in the app, with certain things.

  • Seb says:

Maybe you could ask what people would be willing to pay, otherwise it’s just not viable. It’s a shame I haven’t used the app yet but the site is amazing.

  • Ducky69247 says:

You had an app? Well no wonder it wasn’t getting you any money. We didn’t even know about it! The website works so well I never needed an app!

  • Melissa says:

I’m curious to know if Sidereel ever considered or does sell the information regarding what shows people are watching, how many people are watching, and ratings to interested parties. Wouldn’t that be an ideal way to make money? Could set up an acknowledgement for Sidereel users to agree to share that information. Would not need name, age, and personal information involved. Just general data about what people are watching and what they like and don’t like to watch. Sometimes, when shows I like are being cancelled, I wish that networks could see through Sidereel that I am watching it and I like it and others as well.

  • Camille says:

Just wanted to say I’m very sad for you, I hope your company will continue to exist because you do an awesome job! I’ve been using your website for 10 years and I love it, I even looked at jobs you offered when I got out of college. Anyway, good luck to all of you, keep up the good work, and don’t listen to the haters on this page!

  • Maribel says:

This is so sad for me. Today my main cable box crashed and now I have to reprogram all
My shows. I rely on sidereel to tell me when my show start so I can record if not already programmed or remind me when a new season begins. I’d pay a monthly fee!!! I love this app!!!!

  • Justin B says:

I have been using your site for the past 9 years and it started off as a place to find links to watch shows online but it has evolved into so much more. I personally have always used the desktop version and was never much of a fan of the app. I have turned many people onto the app but most found it to be too confusing for them and it just sat on their phones unused. With the app gone perhaps more time can be spent improving the mobile site for those that still prefer to browse on their phones. It’s definitely not right that you are losing money by keeping the app, but I think a better option would have been a yearly fee or even if you had started selling merchandise to raise the money. Merchandise could open a whole new revenue stream for you as well, and I would definitely rock a Sidereel T-shirt, sweatshirt, or hat. I hope you figure out a solution for those that prefer the app, and thank you for all the hard work everyone does keeping the site running; without it I would be lost.

  • Porschia Holmes says:

Love sidereel, it has changed my life and how i keep up with my favorite shows. Thank you for being here the way you do.

  • Veronica says:

I’d like to echo other commenters in that I would absolutely be willing to pay for an app. I have no idea what the financial model looked like, but if it were something reasonable like an option of $1/month or $10/year, I would be happy to pay that up to $3/month or $30/year. I can’t speak for other users and a proper survey would be necessary on your part to find out if it would be worth the ROI to start up again, but don’t count out a paid app; it’s something to look into. Best wishes, and thank you for continuing the web version.

Also for other iOS users looking for an app-like experience: You can go to sidereel’s homepage, and then click the share icon in Safari, and scroll over to “Add to Homepage”. It’s not perfectly like the app was, but it’s similar enough and easy enough to use. It doesn’t open up in Safari but in its own dedicated window like an app would and then just navigates like the mobile website.

  • Sue says:

Now that Fall Season is about to start I’m really missing the app. It is kinda hard opening browsers on my phone when you’re tracking over 50 shows :(
I would love to get the app back. I’m willing to pay.
